What is the cause of hallux valgus

A

Unknown aetiology

Strong familial trait

Increased incidence in those who wear enclosed footwear

Associated with RA

What are the treatment options for hallux valgus

A

Non-surgical:-

  • Appropriate footwear
  • Physiotherapy

Surgical:-

  • Bunionectomy
  • First metatarsal realignment osteotomy
  • Excision arthroplasty - essentially a proximal hemiphalangectomy
  • Fusion - for degenerative joint disease
