Plain weightbearing X-rays

A
Degree of valgus deformity First/second intermetatarsal angle and distal metatarsal articular angle Presence of osteoarthritis in the first MTPJ

What is the cause of hallux valgus
A
Unknown aetiology
Strong familial trait
Increased incidence in those who wear enclosed footwear
Associated with RA

What are the treatment options for hallux valgus
A
Non-surgical:-
- Appropriate footwear
- Physiotherapy
Surgical:-
- Bunionectomy
- First metatarsal realignment osteotomy
- Excision arthroplasty - essentially a proximal hemiphalangectomy
- Fusion - for degenerative joint disease
