Hallucinogens Flashcards
LSD
Hallucinogens
Taken by mouth, onset < one hour, peak at 2-3 hours, duration 8-12 hours
Tolerance: occurs w/ rapid onset and offset, not typical (because people usually don’t use it enough for tolerance to be a factor)
Dependence: non-reported
Addiction: ?
Phencyclidine
Hallucinogen
**Mechanism: Binds NMDA type glutamate receptor and blocks cation channel
***Effects: Varried and dose dependent = altered perception, dissociative anesthetic, tachycardia, hypertension, sweating, nystagmus (eyes moving back and forth), numbness
Side effects: mood swings, catatonia, violence, coma, psychosis
Tolerance: Some, rarely observed
Dependence: Some, mild abstinance syndrome
Addiction: ?
Delta9 Tetrahydrocannabinol
Mechanism of action: Cannabinoid receptor in CNS, Gprotein-coupled receptors. Mediate inhibition of neuronal function
Effects: impairment of cognitive function
Side effects: tachycardia, reddening of conjunctiva
Very lipophilic, transformed to potent 11-hydroxy-THC
Tolerance: Rapid onset and decay
Dependence: Rare
Addiction: ?
GHB (Gammahydroxybutyrate)
- Metabolite of GABA
- **Agonist of GABAb receptor (GABA-B subtype, not A)
- Anesthetic, euphoria, increased sensory perception, amnesia
- ***“Date Rape Drug” (professor said feeling “close to others” I think)
- **Withdrawal Syndrome similar to ethanol
