Background info
Haiti is an island is located in the Caribbean.
It’s one of the poorest countries in the world.
The 12th of January 2010, at 4:53 pm, and earthquake took place.
It had a magnitude of 7.0, and the epicentre was 25 km away from the capital Port-au-Prince.
It had a violent after-shocks of up to 5.5 and 5.9 in magnitude.
It is situated in a conservative plate boundary.
Social impacts
Over 230,000 people died and 300,000 were injured.
1 million were left homeless.
250,000 residential buildings and 30,000 commercial buildings collapsed.
Casualties were buried in mass graves and disease spread.
Economic impacts
Roads, bridges, fishing ports and irrigation infrastructure was destroyed.
Manufacturing facilities were damaged and 1/5 was left jobless.
All hotels airports and cruise ships were disrupted
Environmental impacts
Streets were filled with bodies of casualties. Water pollution. Destruction of habitats and ecosystems.
