Cuticle
The hairs outer layer of overlapping skin cells, like shingles on a roof, protecting layers within. Also regulates how much moisture penetrates the inner layer
Hair Shaft
Hair located above the skin surface.
Sebaceous Gland
Oil glands connected to the follicle, secrete oil called sebum, lubricates the skin.
Arrector Pili Muscle
Involuntary muscle, when it tracks, the hair stands causing goosebumps.
Follicle
In cases the hair that is in the skin/scalp and anchors the hair in the skin.
Dermal Papilla
At the base of the hair bulb the dermal papilla contains blood vessels that supply nutrients that allow the hair to grow.
Hair Bulb
At the base of the follicle. It has a bulb shape and contains living cells that will form the hair strand.
Medulla
Inner most layer of the hair, it has no function, may not be present in blond or fine hair. Found in coarse hair and beard hair.
Cortex
Most of the hairs thickness is in the cortex layer. Contains keratin proteins and lipid(oils) and determine the strength, elasticity, moisture and colour of your hair.
Epidermis
Outer layer of the skin, it is thin and has no blood cells, but small nerve endings and is made up of five layers.
Root
Part of the hair that is located below the surface of the skin.
Sudoriferous Gland
Sweat glands that excrete perspirations and detoxify the body by removing excess salt and unwanted chemicals.
Dermis (Derma)
Inner layer of the skin.
Blood Vessels
Two tube like structures that transport blood to, and from the heart and various tissues of the body.
