Hair Follicle
Mass of epidermal cells forming a small tube
- The tube like depression/pocket in the skin or scalp that contains the hair root
Hair Root
Anchors hair to the skin cells and is part of the hair located at the bottom of the follicle, below the surface of the skin.
- Part of the hair that lies within the follicle at the base, where the hair grows
Hair Bulb
Swelling at the base of the follicle that provides the hair with nourishment
Hair Papilla
Is a cone shaped elevation of connective tissue that contains the capillaries and nerves located at the base of the follicle that fits into the bulb
Hair shaft
Portion of hair that is above the skin surface
- Has three layers
a. Cuticle (outer layer)
b. Medulla (inner layer)
c. Cortex (Middle layer) **Where color changes happen
Lanugo
Hair on a fetus (very soft, we lose it when we’re born)
Vellus hair
Short, fine hair
- Appears anywhere on the body where terminal hair is not
a. Excepts on the palms and soles of feet
Terminal Hair
Longer, coarse hair that is found on the head, arms, legs, genital area, ect.
Anagen
First stage of hair growth (new hair is produced)
Catagen
Second stage of hair growth
- hair grows upward and detaches from the bulb
Telogen
Final stage of hair growth
- Lasts until the hair is shed
- Known as the resting stage
Syndrome
- Group of symptoms, when combined, characterize a disease or disorder
Depilation
Process of removing hair at skin level (shaving)
Epilation
Process of hair removal when hair is removed from follicle (waxing or tweezing)
