HAI - VRE Flashcards
- Enterococci - Vancomycin - Resistance
1
Q
Enterococci
A
Enterococcus is normally present in the intestine and on skin
Antibiotic resistant opportunistic pathogens commonly found in patient hospitalized for long periods of time and are given multiple courses of antibiotics
- Enterococcus Faecium: more difficult to treat. Higher incidence of resistance
- Enterococcus Faecalis
2
Q
Common infections caused by enterococci
A
- Urinary tract infections
- Endocarditis
3
Q
Vancomycin
A
- Glycopeptide antibiotics
- Inhibitor of cell wall biosynthesis
- Blocks the substrate
Unlike penicillin which blocks the enzyme
4
Q
Resistance of enterococci to vancomycin
A
Loss of a single hydrogen bond
