Haemostasis Flashcards
1
Q
What is haemostasis?
A
The stoppage of blood loss from an injured blood vessel
2
Q
What is primary haemostasis?
A
- Interaction between platelets and damaged endothelium to create a platelet plug
- This with vasoconstriction to lessen blood loss
3
Q
What is vWF?
A
Adheres platelets to endothelium, released by endothelium
4
Q
What is the role of platelets? How do they carry out this role?
A
Plug formation
They change shape from smooth discoid spiculated to increased surface area to adhere to damages endothelium
5
Q
What are the signs/history of thrombocytopenia?
A
- Bleeding after minor cut
- Access to poisons or tx like aspirin
- Purpura and petechiation (small bleeding sites in mm/skin)
- Platelet numbers <20 x 10^9/L, servere if less than 10
