Haemoglobin Flashcards
1
Q
Fn?
A
Absorbs O2 from lungs by forming oxyhaemoglobin;
Hb-H20 + O2 <=> Hb-O2 + H2O
2
Q
How does it carry out its fn?
A
O2 molecule replaces water molecules;
Forms reversible dative bond w Fe2+;
Oxyhaemoglobin carries O2 through oo from one part of body to another
3
Q
Why CO is a more poisonous?
A
CO is a stronger ligand than O2;
Form irreversible dative bonds w Fe2+ in haemoglobin; which is stronger;
CO displaces O2 in oxyhaemoglobin to form carboxyhaemoglobin
Hb-O2 + CO -> Hb-CO + O2
Cuts down O2 supply to body;
Accounting for toxic nature of CO;
=> O2 no this ability
4
Q
How is treatment with pure O2 effective?
A
Hb-O2 + CO -> Hb-CO +O2
[O2] increases, poe shifts to left;
=> forces CO off the haemoglobin
