Complex Cmpd And Ions Flashcards
Define ligand
Anion or neutral molecule containing at least one lp of e;
used to form dative bonds with its central metal atom or ion
How is a complex formed?
Central metal ion that is datively bonded to surrounding ligands
How are ligands been classified?
no of dative bonds they are able o form with central atom
Coordination no is?
No of dative bonds formed bt ligands and central metal atom or ion
Ligand exchange
Ligands datively bonded to the central metal or ion is replaced w other ligands;
No change in OS of central metal atom or ion
Two reasons why T. ions have strong tendency to form complex ions
- High charge density
- >attract lp electron of surrounding water towards itself - Empty available orbitals
-> overlap with lp e on water ligands;
=>dative bonds
Define complex
Formed when a central metal atom or ion is bonded to a group of atoms, molecules or ions;
called ligands by dative bonds
