What is it important to distinguish haematuria from?
A
- Contamination in menstruating women.

What are the causes of haematuria?
A
- Tumours - bladder cancer > renal cancer
- Stones
- Bacterial UTI
- Renal disease - disorders of glomerular basement membrane
- Trauma, iatrogenic, coagulopathy

What is the commonest cause of frank haematuria?
A
BPH

What can change the colour of urine other than blood?
A
- Beetroot and rifampicin - red
- Rhabdomyolysis - brown
- Jaundice - dark green

How should you investigate haematuria?
A
Mid-stream urine for MCS, urine cytology, flexible cystoscopy +/- biopsy.

What are the two types of haematuria?
A
- Frank (macroscopic) - needs further investigating
