Haematopoiesis Flashcards
What does haematopoiesis mean?
The formation and development of blood cells
What makes up blood?
55% plasma
<1% buffy coat of white blood cells and platelets
45% red blood cells
What does Hct stand for?
Haematocrit
What does haematocrit mean?
The proportion of blood made up of red blood cell
What does RBC stand for?
Red blood cell count
What does Hb stand for?
Haemoglobin
What does MCV stand for?
Mean corpuscular volume
How do you calculate MCV?
Haematocrit divided by red blood cell count
What does mean corpuscular volume mean?
The average size of your red blood cells
What does MCH stand for?
Mean corpuscular haemoglobin
How do you calculate MCH?
Haemoglobin divided by red blood cell count
What does mean corpuscular haemoglobin mean?
The amount of haemoglobin per red blood cell
What does RDW stand for?
Red cell distribution width
What is erythropoiesis ?
The formation of red blood cells
What does EPO stand for?
Erythropoietin
How is erythropoeisis regulated?
Decreased O2 levels detected by kidneys
Erythropoietin (EPO) is produced and enters the bone marrow
Increased red blood cell production until O2 increases to capacity which then inhibits the formation of EPO
What is the name of the main stem cell involved in formation of blood cells?
Multipotent hematopoietic stem cell
What 2 stem cells does a multipotent hematopoietic stem cell differentiate into?
Common myeloid progenitor
Common lymphoid progenitor
What blood cells are formed from a common myeloid progenitor?
Platelets, red blood cells, basophils, neutrophils, eosinophils, monocytes, mast cells, macrophage, myeloid dendritic cell
What blood cells are formed from a common lymphoid progenitor?
B lymphocytes, T lymphocytes, plasma cells, natural killer cells, lymphoid dendritic cells
