Haematology and Blood Tests Flashcards
what are the main functions of blood?
Transports gases, nutrients, waste, cells and hormones throughout the body.
Transports O2, CO2, nutrients, hormones, heat and wastes.
Regulates pH, temperature, water content of cells.
Protects against blood loss through clotting.
Protects against disease.
what is the main function of red blood cells/erythrocytes?
picks up oxygen inhaled by the lungs and transported throughout the body, to where it is needed.
what is the main function of white blood cells/leukocytes?
protecting the body from infection
what is the main function of platelets/thrombocytes?
contains chemicals to aid with blood clotting, gathering at the site of injury. The shape enable them to clump together.
what is the main function of plasma?
transports blood cells throughout the body along with nutrients, waste products, antibodies, clotting proteins, chemical messengers such as hormones, and proteins that help maintain the body’s fluid balance
what are the components of blood plasma?
electrolytes, plasma proteins, nutrients from digestion and gases from respiration.
what are the electrolytes in blood plasma?
sodium, potassium, chloride and bicarbonate
what are the plasma proteins in plasma?
albumin, globulins, clotting agents and antibodies
what are the nutrient from digestion in plasma?
vitamins, glucose and fatty acids
what are the gases of respiration in plasma?
C02 and o2
what are the main ways of obtaining blood?
arteries, veins or capillaries
