Haematology Flashcards
Composition of blood
Erythrocytes sink to the bottom (45% IN blood)
Leukocytes and platelets in buffy coat (less than 1% in blood)
Plasma on top (55% in blood)
Physical characteristics of blood

more dense than water
function of blood
▪ Distributing substances
▪ Regulating blood levels of substances
▪ Protecting the body
Describe the formation of blood
Blood formation, called hematopoiesis, happens mainly in the bone marrow. Hematopoietic stem cell will then differentiate lymphoid stem cell into lymphocytes and myeloid stem cell into different kind of blood cell. These cells mature and then go into the bloodstream and do their job
color of oxygen rich blood (physical characteristic)
scarlet
color of oxygen poor (physical characteristic)
dark red
What are those distribution Functions in blood
Deliver O2 from the lungs
Deliver nutrients from the digestive tract to all body cells
Transport hormones from endocrine organs to target organs
What are those Regulation Functions in blood
Maintaining body temperature by absorbing and
distributing heat throughout the body
Maintaining normal pH in body tissues
What are those Protection Functions in blood
Preventing blood loss
By Blood clot formation by platelets and plasma proteins
Preventing infection
▪ Antibodies
▪ Complement proteins
▪ WBCs
