what is Immune (or idiopathic) thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP)?
A
An immune-mediated reduction in the platelet count. Antibodies are directed against the glycoprotein IIb/IIIa or Ib-V-IX complex.

what are features of immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) in children?
A
- typically more acute than in adults
- equal sex incidence
- presence of an isolated thrombocytopaenia
- may follow an infection or vaccination
- usually runs a self-limiting course over 1-2 weeks
