Which sociologist came up with the idea of Habitus?
Bourdieu (1977)
What did Bourdieu argue about this?
The education system legitimises social inequality and reproduces the social class structure. He suggests that each class possesses its own unique set of values and ideas, which make up what we call habitus.
What is Habitus?
A cultural framework for each class related to what it likes and dislikes.
What is Social capital?
Refers to the network that surrounds the student (friends, family)
How can social capital affect achievement?
In order to achieve high they must be surrounded by the right people that can provide help and advice in the times of difficulty the pupil may face.
What is economic capital?
This refers to the money and property each individual possesses.
How can economic capital affect achievement?
Pupils with high economic capital will have the luxury of parents being able to invest money into their education, by buying books, tutors and revision guides, enabling them to access more cultural capital.
