Habits: Good and Bad Flashcards
How much should an adult exercise?
The U.S. weekly goal is 150 minutes of moderate exercise or 75 minutes of intense exercise per week.
Why do some experts think that exercise is more important than weight?
Studies have indicated that someone who exercises well and regularly is less at risk for all of the diseases of ageing than a normal weight person who does not move much, even if that person is overweight.
What are the longitudinal changes in weight in the US?
Adults do not more their legs, arms, or even hands as much as adults did a century ago, thanks to modern technology.
Fortunately adults are becoming increasingly aware of the need to be active.
How does lung cancer reflect trends in smoking cigarettes?
50 years ago, 5x as many U.S. men as women died of lung cancer. However, US men have been quitting smoking for decades, which has decreased male lung cancer deaths.
Meanwhile, as men were quitting smoking, the number of women who smoke increased, which has increased female lung cancer rates; lung cancer now kills as many women as men.
How do ethnicity, gender, and nationality affect smoking rates?
Cigarette smoking has been declining over the past decade in North America for every gender and age group. Recent data has shown that both sexes have decreased smoking but that fewer women have quit: in 1970 1/2 of US men and 1/3 of women smoked, but by 2010 only 20% of men and 18% of women did.
Unfortunately, about half of the adults in European countries smoke, and smoking among Asian women is increasing.
Who is most likely to suffer from opioid abuse?
Those over the age of 25.
The number of opioid related deaths is highest among those ages 45-54.
Why would SES predict health, even in a nation with free, public health care?
Money and education protect health.
Individuals who are poor tend to have poorer eating habits and greater rates of obesity, more stress, bad health habits, less access to doctors, and lower quality medical care.
