Habitats Flashcards
What is a habitat?
The natural home of a plant or animal
What does a habitat provide?
Depends upon animal/ plant needs.
Provides shelter, warmth, food, water, safety in which to produce offspring.
Does only one animal/ plant live in a habitat?
No, many different plants and animals live there. They may depend upon each other, and may have adapted for that habitat (adaptation).
What is a terrestrial habitat?
On land, e.g. Grassland, cave, tundra, forest, mountain, underground, desert, jungle, trees
What is an aquatic habitat?
In water, e.g. River, ocean, lake, swamp, dam, wetland.
What is an otter’s habitat, and how has it adapted (3) to this?
Water
Eyes and nostrils can close under water
Webbed feet to help move in water
Long whiskers to help feel vibrations of potential food moving in water
What is an squirrel’s habitat, and how has it adapted (3) to this?
Trees
Long claws for climbing
Strong teeth for opening nuts
Bushy tail for balance
What is an cactus’s habitat, and how has it adapted (3) to this?
Desert
Long roots to find water
Fleshy stems to store water
Thin needle leaves (small surface area) so don’t lose much water.
What is an desert rat’s habitat, and how has it adapted (5) to this?
Sahara Desert (up to 55 degrees C)
Long tail - help balance
Large toes - stop sinking in sand
Large ears - help lose excess body heat (large surface area)
Active at night - air temp cooler
Good sight and hearing - helps at night
Thin fur - helps keeps body heat in a night
What is a seal’s habitat, and how has it adapted (5) to this?
North Pole - v cold Streamlined body - helps swim efficiently Small ears - stops heat loss Layers of fat - keeps body warm Webbed feet - helps move through water Oily fur - keeps waterproof
What is a fish’s habitat, and want adaptations (5) does it have for this?
Water
Gills - let it breathe in water
Streamline body - move efficiently through water
Fins - help move and balance
Sensitive areas - smell food over long distances
Body picks up vibrations - helps avoids danger
What is a frog’s habitat, and want adaptations (7) does it have for this?
Water and land
Eyes and nostril - above water when swims
Wide mouth and sticky tongue - good for catching insects
Lungs - fast breathing
Moist skin - allows oxygen to pass through
Webbed feet. - help swim
Powerful hind legs - for swimming and jumping
Sensitive areas - pick up vibrations in water
