Haber Process Flashcards
what makes ammonia?
nitrogen + hydrogen
where does nitrogen come from?
air
where does hydrogen come from?
natural gas
conditions needed for haber process? (temp, pressure, catalyst)
temp = 450 degrees celcius? pressure = 200 atm catalyst = made from iron
what is a catalyst?
something that increases the rate of reaction by lowering the activation energy by creating a short cut and doesn’t get used up.
what is the forward reaction in the haber process
exothermic
what is the backward reaction in the haber process
endothermic
what happens to the yield if the temperature is higher or lower than 450 degrees?
higher = lower yield lower = too slow, too low ror
what happens to the yield if the pressure is higher or lower than 200 atm?
higher = too expensive in energy + money lower = too slow, poor yield
what affect does the iron catalyst have on equilibrium?
none bc ror forward and backward increase at same amt
