HA Respiratory Flashcards
Def: A complete or partial collapse of the entire lung or lobe of the lung
Atelectasis
Def: A measure of the lung’s ability to stretch and expand
Lung/Pulmonary Compliance
Def: Lipoprotein produced by alveolar cells, interferes with adhesion of water molecules, reducing surface tension and helping to expand lungs
Surfactant
Def: Cessation of breathing lasting from a few seconds to a few minutes
Apnea
Def: Contagious respiratory tract infection I.e Whooping cough
Pertussis
Def: Lining of the lung becomes infected
Pleuritis/Pleurisy
Def: Measures the pH and levels of carbon dioxide (an acid) and bicarbonate (a base) in the blood
Acid-Base Balance
Def: Tiny air sacs at the end of the bronchioles where the lungs and the blood exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide during the process of breathing in and breathing out
Alveoli
Def: A drug used to prevent or relieve a cough
Antitussive
Def: Measures the acidity (pH) and the levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood from an artery. This test is used to find out how well your lungs are able to move oxygen into the blood and remove carbon dioxide from the blood.
Arterial Blood Gas
Def: A procedure a doctor uses to look inside the lungs
Bronchoscopy
Def: Enlargement and rounding of the terminal portion of the fingers, associated with chronic hypoxemia (Rounded shape of the nail bed)
Clubbing
Def: A grating sound or sensation produced by friction between bone and cartilage or the fractured parts of a bone
Crepitus
