H5 (Switches) Flashcards
In what layer operates the switch
2
On what makes the switch decisions
MAC
Where is the CAM stored
RAM
How is the CAM build
By monitoring source MACs
What happens when the MAC is not in CAM
Frame goes everywhere
Where are broadcasts send
All ports except of the sender
What are the two ways of forwarding frames
Store and forward: store entire frame and check for errors
Cut-through: forward soon
What are the two types of Store and Forward
Port based buffering: frames are stored in queues for ports. One frame can delay all frames for all ports.
Shared Buffering: All frames are stored in a common buffer. Allows for different-speeds. This is called Asymmetrical Switching.
What is asymmetrical switching
Different speeds for each port
What are the two types of cut-through
Fast Forward: immediately forward after reading MAC
Fragment Free: Check the first 64 bytes.
What is Auto MDIX
Automaticcally detect plugs and configure accordingly. Helps reducing config errors.
What is bandwidth
The amount of data that it can handle in megabits/s
What is throughput
Effective bandwidth, slower due to amount of connections etc.
What is auto-negotiation
Enables devices to exchange info about duplex mode. Otherwise a lot of collisions will happen.
