3 styles of flash pan technology
- Matchlock - lighted wicks in a moveable arm
- Wheellock - flint pressed up against a roughened metal wheel (like modern lighters)
- Flintlock - the flint was in the cock, when the trigger was pulled , a strong spring snapped the cock down, striking the steel with the flint and producing sparks which fell into the flashpan below
