H1 Flashcards
What is the main function of bone marrow?
Haemopoesis
Define haemopoesis
Production of all cellular components of blood and plasma
Where are blood cells produced during foetal life?
- 0-6 weeks: yolk sac
- 6 weeks-6 months: liver, spleen
- 6 months-birth: bone marrow
Where are blood cells in children up to 5 years old?
All bones (red bone marrow)
Where are blood cells produced in adults?
- Red marrow in axial skeleton
- Slowly replaced by yellow marrow (fat) with age
- Under stress, liver and spleen produce blood cells
Name the 3 cell lines
erythrocytes (RBC)
leucocytes (WBC)
thrombocytes (platelets)
What is the function of leucocytes?
Important immune function
What is the function of platelets?
haemostasis: prevents and stops bleeding
What is the role of bone marrow in blood cell development?
Site of haemopoesis, produces multipotent stem cells that differentiate into blood cells
What are the key components of haemostasis?
- constriction of damaged vessel
- platelet plug formation: adhesion of platelets to damaged epithelium
- clot formation: changing of fibrinogen to fibrin by clotting factors
