o Leukoplakia: white patches that do not rub off
o Erythroplakia: red velvety patches; not due to another condition
most common tumor of H&N
oropharyngeal cancer, squamous cell type
HPV associated
oral squamous cell cancer
HPV related
young adults, M>F
presents as neck mass
good prognosis
laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma
hoarseness and alteraion of voice; thorat pain, dysphagia
glottic is most common
supraglottic (foreign body sensation, pain, hemoptysis, muffled voice)
salivary gland tumors
mucoepidermoid is most common (facial nerve involvement)
adenoid cystic carcinoma (invades nerves–>nerve sx)
acinic cell carcinoma (parotid, pts require long term follow-up)
nasopharyngeal carcinoma
china, eskimos
most common neck mass
presents w/ unilateral hearing loss, otitis media
nonkeratinizing SCC has better prognosis
sinonasal adenocarcinoma
woodworkers! all are aggressive
unilateral nasal obstruciton, epistaxis, pain for a few months
nasal type angiocentric NK/T cell lymphoma
aggressive lymphoma w/ poor prognosis
insidious
atypical lymphoid infiltrate, CD56+, EBV+
vessel occlusion–>necrosis
olfactory neuroblastoma
bimodal
nasal obstruction, epistaxis
cells in neurofibrillar matrix forming rosettes
