Gyroscopic Instruments Flashcards
Two principles of a gyroscope
The two principles of a gyroscope are : rigidity in space and precession
Attitude Indicator
Operates on the principle of rigidity in space - shows bank and pitch information. Should show correct attitude within 5 minutes of starting engine. Normally vacuum driven but may be electric.
errors include:
acceleration (pitch up)/ deceleration (pitch down) errors.
roll-out errors (following a 180 degree turn - may show turn in opposite direction)
Heading indicator
Operates on rigidity in space. Must be calibrated with compass at beginning of flight and recalibrated from time to time. THOUGH it may be “slaved” to a magnetic heading source such as a flux gate. Normally vacuum operated.
Turn Indicator
operates on the principle of precession.
Turn coordinator shows rate of turn and rate of roll
turn and slip indicator shows rate of turn only.
