GYN Anatomy Flashcards
Description of vulva:
Includes:
Mons pubis
Labia minora
labia majora
clitoris
urinary meatus
vaginal opening
vestibular bulb
Function of Mon pubis
mound like fatty tissue that covers and protects the symphysis pubis
During puberty genital hair growth covers this pad of tissue.
Labia majora
Assist in keeping the vaginal introitus closed which in turn helps prevent infection
Labia minora
Surrounded by the labia majora….
anterior aspect forms the prepuce of the clitoris
Assist in enclosing the opening of the urethra and the vagina
Clitoris
sensitive organ that is typically described as the female homologue of the penis in male.
Urethral orifice
where urine exits in both males and females.
vaginal introitus/orifice
Vaginal opening: This is where your baby exits your body during childbirth and where period blood flows during menstruation. It’s also the hole where a penis, finger, sex toy, tampon or menstrual cup can be inserted.
skene’s gland
release mucus
form a triangular area of mucous membrane surrounding the urethral meatus from the clitoral gland to the vaginal upper rim or caruncle
Bartholin’s glands
made of columnar cells that secrete clear or whitish mucus are stimulated during sexual arousal
if the bartholin’s ducts are blocked, infection can occur resulting in cyst formation that can lead to the development of an abscess
ovaries
produce gamates (ova) and sex hormones estrogen and progesterone
ovaries produce eggs and hormones
fallopian tubes
They function as channels for oocyte transport and fertilization
uterus
It’s where a fertilized egg implants during pregnancy and where your baby develops until birth. It’s also responsible for your menstrual cycle.
cervix
The cervix connects the body of the uterus to the vagina. Part of the lining of the cervix contains glands that make and release mucus. For most of the menstrual cycle and during pregnancy, the mucus is thick and stops sperm from entering the uterus.
vagina
The vagina has 3 main functions: provides a passageway for blood and mucosal tissue from the uterus during a woman’s monthly period. receives the penis during sexual intercourse and holds the sperm until they pass into the uterus. provides a passageway for childbirth.
