GW - Groundwater & Karst Topography Flashcards

1
Q

Define:

Hydrologic Cycle?

A

Simply the Water cycle
(Evaporation -> Condensation -> causes weathering then it repeates the cycle)

Q

Define:

Aquifer?

A

A slab of rock that is both porous and permabel which allows groundwater to be stored

5
Q

Define:

Aquicludes?

What do they act as?

A

Do not store or transport water - not porous and permeable

Floors and Ceilings of Aquifers

Q

Define:

Zone of Aeration?

A

Mixture of soil and water and air
Top layer of a groundwater zone
Highly variable due to atmospheric conditions

Q

Define:

Zone of Saturation?

A

Level right below zone of aeration
layer where all of the pore spaces are completely filled up with water

Q

Define:

Water Table?

A

Top of the water surface in the zone of saturation (Measured from depth of the surface)

Q

Define:

Waterless Zone?

A

Layer of impermeable or nonporous rock that water cannot get through

10
Q

Define:

Confined Aquifer?

How do we get this water?

A

Sandwich between to aquicludes
The water has no where to go except up… cannot fill up as easily from zone of aeration
water in confined aquifer is under pressure

Using an Artesian Well

Q

Explain:

Groundwater Pollution?

A

Once you pollute groundwater, its effectively permanent becuase it is hard to uninfect water under 800 ft

16
Q

Define:

Precipitation?

A

The calcium carbonate comes out of solution and regains its solid form

Forms Stalagmites and Stalactites

17
Q

Define:

Karst Topography?

A

Any terrain that is the consequence of dissolution (*Limestone that has been dissoluted due to carbonation)

18
Q

Sinkholes?

A

Rounded depressions formed by the dissolution of surfac carbonate rocks
