Explain:
Rubenstein’s distinctive features of place?
Place: The specific point on Earth distinguished by a particular characteristic.
Toponyms: A name given to a place on Earth (Give spaces meaning, contributes to sense of place)
Site: The physical character of a place (Water, climate, sources, topography, soil, vegetation, latitude and elevation)
Situation: AKA relative location… location of a place relative to other places
Explain:
Space?
The physical gap or interval between two objects. Many objects are distributed across space in a regular manner, for discernible reasons.
Explain:
Cultural Landscape?
A combination of the cultural (language and religion) features, economic (agriculture and industry) features, and physical (Climate and vegetation) features of a region. Basic Definition:
Basic Definition: An environment that has human involvment
Define and Explain:
Cresswell’s 3 Elements of Place (borrowed by Agnew)?
Place: Places must have some relationship to humans (A meaningful location)
Location: The fixed objective coordinate on the Earth’s surface (A specific location)
Locale: The material setting for social relations - the actual shape of place within which people conduct their lives as individuals, as men or women, as white or black, straight or gay
Sense of Place: The subjective and emotional attachment people have to a place
