gut acid secretion Flashcards
1
Q
how do antacids work
A
these are good for mild acid reflux and they serve to neutralise the stomach acid secreted
2
Q
how do proton pump inhibitors work
A
these inhibit the H+/K+ ATPase pumps at the cell lumen to inhibit acid secretion - omeprazole
these are activated by the stomach acid secretions themselves, take 30 minutes before food
3
Q
how does an antihistamine work for gut acid secretion
A
cimetidine, this inhibits stimulation of acid secretion by histamine which would normally increase secretions in the parietal cell
