Gustatory System Flashcards
1
Q
Papilla
A
Small bump projecting from the tongue’s surface that contain taste receptor cell buds
2
Q
Taste buds
A
A cluster of receptor cells that each respond to unique food molecules
3
Q
Gustatory system
A
- Receptors in papillae send action potential via cranial nerves to the solitary nucleus
- Signals are sent to the thalamus to be relayed
- Signals are relayed to the gustatory cortex
4
Q
Gustatory cortex
A
Chemotopically organized (by taste) area responsible for taste sensation (means that each taste is processed in a certain region of the cortex)
5
Q
Sweet
A
Replenishes energy
6
Q
Salty
A
Maintains polarity of cell membranes
7
Q
Sour
A
Avoid because they could be toxic acids
8
Q
Bitter
A
Avoid because they could be poisons
9
Q
Umami
A
Signifies proteins for internal repair
