What type of products should a massage therapist use on clients with skin sensitivity?
Hypoallergenic lotion and scentless oil- like grapeseed or canola oils- are excellent options for the sentitive client. It is also important to ask the client about any allergies they may have, especially when using certain carrier and essential oils.
Why is important to not wear nail polish?
Nail polish can harbor bacteria.
What is the Alexander Techinque?
It is a style of movement and body awareness developed by F.M. Alexander to keep the skeletal system in alignment during daily activties. Practitioners of this techique teach clients how to improve their posture with minimal physical touch.
What is a chriopractic adjustment?
A process that releases the gas that accumulates in joint capsules due to regular wear and tear, poor posture, and/or acute injury.
What is a commission?
A commission is percentage of revenue that a massage therapist is paid. This does not include tips. If an employler pays therapist based on commission, it is usually because they offer massages at different rates.
What is one of the primary reasons a therapist would give a complementary massage?
These are free massages that are often used as promotional tools.
What is meant by “universal precautions”?
Universal precautions are a standardized set of rules in the health care industry to prevent the spread of infection. In a nutshell, universal precautions limit contact with bodily fluids.
How is a tractioning machine used and what does it do?
The client lies supine on the table, the doctor sets a timer, and a pin move along the client’s spine for a set amount of time (usually 5-7 mintues), releasing the erector spinae. It helps elongate the spine.
What does the term rehab refer to?
It refers to the rehabilitation of injured muscles.
What are standard precautions?
A set of control practice set forth by the CDC to limit the spread of infection. Closesly related to universal percautions, standards precautions include such common practices as frequent hand-washing and changing sheets between clients.
What are sharps?
Sharps are needles used in treatment. These can include acupuncture needles, hypodermic needles, and more. Sharps must be disposed of according to FDA regulations.
What is ROM?
ROM is a range of motion of a particular joint measured in degree. Measure ROM is an easy way to track the effects of manual therapy.
What is a report of findings and where/ when is it typically used?
Often in chiropractic setting, the ROF describes a doctor’s opion about the patient’s dianosis and recommended treatment plan. IT is usually presented to the patient as a formal report during their second appointment.
What is a plumb line?
A plumb line is a string or wire attached to the ceiling of the room that is weighted so that it falls perfectly perpendicular to the ground for postural analysis.
The client stands beside of hehind a plumb line so the therapist can see whether the client’s spine and other joints are out alignment from their center of gravity.
