Whiskey Rebellion

A

rebellion in Pennsylvania in 1794. famers were mad about excise tax bc they needed to sell whiskey to survive economically. Washington and Hamilton invaded pennsylvania, and only two were convicted, and they were pardoned by washington.

Jay’s Treaty

A

Washington attempted to avoid war by sending John Jay to Britain to negotiate a treaty, but Hamilton sabotaged it by telling Britain of America’s arguing points. Britain agreed to leave forts and pay for the damaged ships, but did not say anything about further seizures, and America still had to pay off their British debt.

Alien and Sedition Acts

A

Alien Act-president could deport “dangerous” foreigners during times of peace. never really enforced.

Sedition Acts-govt could fine/imprison reporters who falsely report govt policies or govt officials. expired after adams leaves office.

A

Kentucky(Jefferson)and Virginia(Madison), said federal regime had exceeded it’s constitutional powers w/ alien and sedation acts.
