Funding and Assumption (Hamilton’s Financial Plan)
federal govt would pay off taxes at face value + interest. congress would roll the state’s taxes together. assumption=states debt is national debt when it came during war
Excise Tax
tax on domestic items, most notably whiskey
Whiskey Rebellion
rebellion in Pennsylvania in 1794. famers were mad about excise tax bc they needed to sell whiskey to survive economically. Washington and Hamilton invaded pennsylvania, and only two were convicted, and they were pardoned by washington.
Federalist Party
hamiltonian ppl, sided with britain over france, favored central govt
Democratic-Republican Party
jeffersonian ppl, sided with france over britain, favored state govt
Treaty of Greenville
treaty between indians and america, confederacy(indians) gave land to america(old northwest/midwest) and americans paid indians/gave them hunting ability
Jay’s Treaty
Washington attempted to avoid war by sending John Jay to Britain to negotiate a treaty, but Hamilton sabotaged it by telling Britain of America’s arguing points. Britain agreed to leave forts and pay for the damaged ships, but did not say anything about further seizures, and America still had to pay off their British debt.
Pinckney’s Treaty
treaty w/ spain, america got Mississippi river, new orleans, and western floridia
Alien and Sedition Acts
Alien Act-president could deport “dangerous” foreigners during times of peace. never really enforced.
Sedition Acts-govt could fine/imprison reporters who falsely report govt policies or govt officials. expired after adams leaves office.
Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions
Kentucky(Jefferson)and Virginia(Madison), said federal regime had exceeded it’s constitutional powers w/ alien and sedation acts.
