8-1: Loyalists
Colonists still loyal to the king, hated by patriots. a great amount of them were in the south.
s-some were against the war, not everyone was for it
8-2: Battle of Saratoga
British General Burgoyne was supposed to March to Albany from Lake Champlain to meet up with General Howe. Ever so slowly his troops were shot by militia while marching there. Forced to surrender to the American general Horatio Gates
s-Revived colonial cause, convinced France to side with the colonies
8-3: Continental Congress
(second one at least) group of men from all of the colonies got together and wrote the declaration of independence.
s-Official start of the United States of America(on paper)
8-4: Treaty of Fort Stanwix
First treaty between America an Indian nation(pro-British Iroquois.)
s-America got more land/more power
8-5: Battle of Yorktown
1781, Cornwallis retreats to Chesapeake bay to escape, but is met by the french navy. He surrenders all of his men. Final winning battle in the revolutionary war
s-America officially beats England, free country!
8-6: Treaty of Paris
Treaty between United States and Britain to end the revolutionary war, held in Paris
s-British formally recognize the independence of the United States
8-7: Thomas Paine
Author of Common Sense(pamphlet that explained why a new country made sense.)
s-influenced many more colonists to be anti-england
8-8: Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom
Thomas Jefferson wrote it to disestablish the Anglican church in Virginia, complete religious freedom
s- Influenced first amendment(freedom of religion) and created separation of church and state
8-9: Republican Motherhood
Selfless devotion of a mother=model for civic virtue in a republic
s-Elevated women to role of keepers of national conscience and expanded educational opportunities for women
8-10: Articles of Confederation
written 1777, ratified by all of the states in 1781. First draft for the constitution
s-failures influenced what needed to be changed for the Constitution. Also helped convince french to aid in the war
