Guest Lecturer 1 Flashcards
What are the diagnostic criteria for substance use disorder?
1) substance taken in large amounts/longer time than intended
2) no effort to control use
3) lot of time spent acquiring substance
4) craving to use
5) failure to fulfill obligations at work/school/etc
6) social or personal problems b/c of drug
7) recreational activities given up
8) use in dangerous situations
9) continued use despite the fact that there is a psychological or physical problem b/c of it
10) tolerance
11) withdrawal
How do the diagnostic criteria for substance use relate to the classic definition of addiction?
Includes the idea of compulsive use and desire to use and time acquiring it is great; this list doesn’t include relapse likelihood, however.
What are the 3 kinds of assays used to measure drug effects?
Physiological, Interoceptive, Behavioral
What are the 5 physiological assays used to measure drug effects?
Locomotor activity, Coordination, Ataxia, Pain Sensitivity, Thermoregulation
What are the 3 interoceptive assays used to measure drug effects?
Conditioned place preference, drug discrimination, classical conditioning
What is the 1 behavioral assay used to measure drug effects?
Self-administration
What are the pros and cons of using self-administration in animal models?
Cons
1) animals don’t always take enough to become dependent
2) typically model binge-like behavior
3) forced access/admin
4) selective breeding for high-taking phenotype
5) invasive surgical procedures
6) food restriction
7) presentation of cues
Pros
1) can access behavior since rats do it themselves
What is Piazza’s model?
Defines addiction by “loss of control”; evaluates addiction based on 3 factors with a mathematical score
How does Piazza’s model attempt to give face, predictive, and construct validity to an animal model of addiction?
It hits on 3 key evaluation points which include:
1) difficulty to limit/stop drug use
2) high motivation to seek and use the drug
3) maintained drug use despite negative consequences
Mathematically quantifies things and gives rats an “addiction score”
What are the 3 factors evaluated in Piazza’s model?
1) difficulty to stop/limit drug use
2) high motivation to seek or use the drug
3) maintain use besides negative consequences
