How She Became “Old Ironsides”
Man leaned over the sides and saw the enemy cannonballs either sticking to her hull or bouncing off. He shouted, “Huzzah! Her sides are made of Iron” to which Capt. Hull replied: “Ironsides Aye!”
William S. Bush and His Relationship to the Battle
Bush was 1st Lt of Marines aboard Constitution. We tried Crossing the T and it failed because we ran into Guerriere. Bush took the initiative and asked Hull: “Shall I board her sir?” Before Hull could reply, Bush was shot in the face and killed by an enemy marine. Bush was the first marine officer to ever be killed in a Naval engagement.
Significance of Guerriere Battle
First major victory against the British Navy by the Americans.
