US bought Louisiana Territory from France and it encompassed the Michigan area. Britain claimed that the area was theirs, we disputed it.

Chesapeake/Leopard Affair
A
HMS Leopard attacked USS Chesapeake in a neutral port. Claimed that 4 of the Sailors were British. 2 were African-American and the US did not recognize Blacks as people so the British took them too.
