Identify the four tools used during the GU exam
Gloves: Examination of the penis and scrotum including glans, urethral meatus, penile shaft, testes and any hernias. Also used during DRE and prostate exam.
Penlight: To transilluminate scrotal mass. If retractable and transilluminates: hydrocele. If retractable but does not transilluminate: likely hernia. If not retractable and does not transilluminate: could be incarcerated hernia (requiring surgery).
Guiac card/fecal occult blood testing: Tests for blood in stool. Can be sign of GI bleeding or anemia.
Emesis basin: May be used in case patient defecates.

Hydrocele
Collection of fluid in scrotum
Spermatocele
Benign, sperm-filled cyst at head of epididymis
Varicocele
Enlargement of veins in scrotum
Epididymitis
Inflammation of epididymis from chlamydia, gonorrhea, E coli
Testicular tumor
Cancer in testes
Epispadias
Urethral deformity; can open anywhere along length of penis
Indirect inguinal hernia
Through internal ring. Palpate with fingertip on exam.
Direct inguinal hernia
Through external ring. Hernia bulges anteriorly.
Femoral hernia
Through femoral ring. Inguinal canal empty on exam.
Cryptorchidism
Undescended testis(es)
