GSCE Physics Flashcards
What is a force?
A force (in newtons, N) can change the motion of an object.
What is a vector?
A vector is a physical quantity, such as displacement or velocity, that has a magnitude and a direction (unlike a
scalar which has magnitude only).
What is a resultant force?
A single force that has the same effect as all the forces acting on the object.
What is a parallelogram of forces?
A geometrical method used to find the resultant of two forces that do not act along the same line.
What is a displacement?
Distance in a given direction.
What is friction?
The force opposing the relative motion of two solid surfaces in contact.
What is magnitude in forces in balance?
The size or amount of a physical quantity.
Weight =
Mass X gravitational field strength
Distance travelled =
Speed X time.
Resultant force =
Mass X acceleration.
Work done =
Force X distance
(Perpendicular to the direction of the force)
Force =
Spring constant X extension.
Acceleration =
Change in velocity/time taken. Or Final velocity-initial velocity/ time taken.
Momentum =
Mass x Velocity
What is the centre mass?
The point at which all the mass of an object seems to be concentrated. Its called the centre of mass.
