Growth cycle Flashcards
Four examples of early-budding varieties?
Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Grenache
Three examples of late-budding varieties?
Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah
Name three vine nutrient needs.
Principally nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus
What are petioles?
New buds develop at the base of the leaf stalks (petioles) on the new growing shoots.
When does flowering usually take place?
Within 8 weeks of budburst.
Key cause of poor yields in cooler climates?
Negatively affected fruitset. Wind, cold, rain.
Define coulure.
Irregular fruitset. A condition of the grape bunch in which fruit set has failed for a high proportion of flowers.
Therefore no grape develops.
Define millerandage.
A condition of the grape bunch in which there is a high proportion of seedless grapes.
4 stages of grape development?
Grape-berry formation
Véraison
Ripening
Extra-ripening
What is the lag phase?
Grape growth slows down for a few days between berry formation and véraison.
Temperature range to stimulate budburst?
Above 10C
Optimal temperature range for new shoot and leaf growth?
18-33C
What are methoxypyrazines?
Compound found in overly acidic grapes that give herbaceous aromas and flavours.
Optimum temperature range for anthocyanin synthesis in black grapes?
15-25C
Extreme heat can cause the stomata to close and therefore limit the intake of what?
Carbon dioxide
