Growth Control and Antimicrobial Resistance Flashcards
What does Bacteriostatic mean?
stopping growth/reproduction w/o disrupting the viability of cells
What does Bacteriocidal mean?
stopping growth and disrupting viability of cells
What does Bacteriolytic mean?
stopping growth and destroying cells
What do Sterilants do?
destroy all microbial life, including spores
What do Disinfectants do?
kill microbes, not always spores, for surfaces
What does Sanitizer do?
reduce the total # of microbes
What do Antiseptics and/or Germicides do?
kill or inhibit all microbes; safe for living tissues
What are Macrolides?
antibiotics that target the 50S subunit of ribosome
What are Tetracyclines?
antibiotics that inhibits functioning of 30S ribosomal subunit
What are 5 reasons that microorganisms are naturaly resistant to certain antibiotics?
- lacks targeted structure
- impermeable to antibiotic
- inactivate the antibiotic
- modification of the antibiotic’s target that leads to lower affinity
- pump out the antibiotic (efflux)
