GROWTH Flashcards
What is growth ?
It is an irreversible change leading to change in the dimension of the living organism.
It is not the defining feature of the living organism
What type of growth is seen in living being ?
Growth of the living organism is INTRINSIC (due to accumulation of material within)
What are the twin characteristics of the growth ?
- Increase in number
2. Increase in mass
Growth occurs in which living organism ?
Growth occurs in both the unicellular and multicellular and in both the animals and plants.
How is the growth in the unicellular organism differ form the multicellular ?
In the unicellular organism growth and reproduction are mutually inclusive event. Growth and reproduction are synonymous in the unicellular organism.
Whereas in multicellular organism are mutually exclusive(differ) events.
What is the pattern and duration of the growth in the plants ?
In the plants growth is
- Localized - At specific location (due to meristem)
- Indefinite - unlimited growth (due to actively dividing cell called meristems)
What is the pattern and duration of the growth in the animals ?
In the animals growth is
- Diffused - Throughout the body
- Definite - Up to a limit
Why growth is not taken as the defining feature of the living beings ?
Growth cannot can be taken as the defining feature of the living organism because there are certain non-living things which show growth.
Give the example of the non living things which show growth and what is the feature of their growth ?
- Example - mountain , rocks , sand dune
- Features - a) Reversible growth
b) Extrinsic (due to the accumulation of the materials from the outside )
