Groups of algae (from eukaryotes ch) Flashcards

1
Q

Brown algae

A
  • Kelp, seaweed (macro)
  • Found in coastal waters
  • Has air bladders: fill with air and allow for buoyancy when sun is out for photosynthesis
  • Looks like grapes
  • Industrial uses:
    seaweed for food
  • Chemicals:
Algin: thickening agent for stuff like lotion, ice cream, and tires
Laminaria japonica → used to induce vaginal dilation (sx treatments into uterus from vagina)

Q

Red algae

A
  • Live at greatest ocean depths (cannot effectively synthesize)
  • Carentoids → red color in red algae and red leaves
  • Industrial uses: Agar
Carrageenan: used as a clarifying agent in items like shampoos
    Dry bits: irish moss

Q

Spirogyra (Green algae)

A
  • Evolutionary precursor to terrestrial plants but they lack tissue differentiation
  • Aquatic
  • Pond scum
  • Volvox: colonial organism –> cells are permanently stuck together in 1 group

Q

Dinoflagellate

A
  • Free-floating organisms (plankton, cannot move under their own power)
  • Plankton types: zooplankton (animal, SpongeBob), Phytoplankton (plant)

A
  • The main decomposers in aquatic environments
  • Water molds are found as white, cotton masses on dead freshwater organisms
