Groups of algae (from eukaryotes ch) Flashcards
1
Q
Brown algae
A
- Kelp, seaweed (macro)
- Found in coastal waters
- Has air bladders: fill with air and allow for buoyancy when sun is out for photosynthesis
- Looks like grapes
- Industrial uses:
seaweed for food - Chemicals:
Algin: thickening agent for stuff like lotion, ice cream, and tires
Laminaria japonica → used to induce vaginal dilation (sx treatments into uterus from vagina)
2
Q
Red algae
A
- Live at greatest ocean depths (cannot effectively synthesize)
- Carentoids → red color in red algae and red leaves
- Industrial uses: Agar
Carrageenan: used as a clarifying agent in items like shampoos
Dry bits: irish moss
3
Q
Spirogyra (Green algae)
A
- Evolutionary precursor to terrestrial plants but they lack tissue differentiation
- Aquatic
- Pond scum
- Volvox: colonial organism –> cells are permanently stuck together in 1 group
4
Q
Diatoms
A
- Silica cell wall with pectin
- Unicellular but have silica cell wall
- Dead diatoms → convert to petroleum
5
Q
Dinoflagellate
A
- Free-floating organisms (plankton, cannot move under their own power)
- Plankton types: zooplankton (animal, SpongeBob), Phytoplankton (plant)
- Bioluminescence
- Red tide and paralytic shellfish poisoning
6
Q
Oomycota aka water mold
A
- The main decomposers in aquatic environments
- Water molds are found as white, cotton masses on dead freshwater organisms
- Irish Potato Famine
