Groups in the Periodic Table Flashcards
What are the group 1 metals also known as?
Alkali metals
List the alkali metals in order of reactivity from least to most reactive.
Lithium, Sodium, Potassium, Rubidium, Caesium and Francium
Give 2 physical properties of Group 1 metals.
Very soft, Very low melting points
Why are group 1 metals very reactive?
They only have 1 outer shell electron which is very easy to loose and also the larger the atom, the more reactive the metal because the other shells shield the force between the positively charged nucleus and the electrons.
Reactions between cold water and an alkali metal makes what?
A Hydroxide and Hydrogen gas
What is the chemical test for Hydrogen?
Hold a lit splint over it and if it is hydrogen there will be a ‘squeeky pop’
Does reactivity increase or decrease down group 1?
Increase
What are group 7 elements also called?
The Halogens
What do all group 7 elements exist as?
Diatomic molecules
Describe the appearance of Iodine.
Dark grey crystalline solid which gives a dark purple vapour
What is the chemical test for chlorine?
It will bleach damp blue litmus paper
Does reactivity increase or decrease down group 7?
Decrease
