Groups In The Periodic Table Flashcards
What are the properties of the transition metals
They are good conductors of electricity
They are malleable so can be easily bent and shaped
They have high melting points
They form colourful compounds
what is the structure of metals
The atoms are held with metallic bonds
They have a giant structure consisting of positive ions and free electrons
The outer electrons bond the atoms by forming a sea of electrons
Metals are insoluble
They layers can slide over each other easily so they can be bent and shaped
What are the properties of the alkali metals
They are soft
They have low melting points
They react vigorously in water to from hydroxides
This forms an alkaline solution
Reactivity increases down the group because the attraction from the nucleus to the one outer electron gets weaker
Hat are the properties of the halogens
They have 7 outer electrons
They react with metals to form metal halides
They react with hydrogen to form hydrogen halides
More reactive halogens can displace less reactive ones
The higher up the Group the more reactive because the attraction from the nucleus to the outer shell is greater so they attract the electron more
What are the properties of the noble gases
They are very unreactive
They are colourless gases at room temperature
They are non flammable
They are hard to observe and it took a long time for them to be discovered
The boiling points and density increases as you go down the group
