Groups in the Periodic Table Flashcards
What is group 1
Alkali metals
Properties of group 1
Low melting points
Very soft
Form ionic compounds and lose their outer electron very easily so they don’t form covalent bonds
How reactive are group 1 metals
Very reactive
More reactive going down
What happens when group 1 metals are put in water
They react vigorously
Li - moves around on surface and fizzes
Na and K - they do the sae but also melt and K burns with a lilac flame
What is group 7
Halogens
What happens as you go down the group of halogens
Melting and boiling points increase
Reactivity decreases as it is harder to attract an electron (shielding)
What do halogens look like at room temperature
Cl2 - green gas, toxic
Br2 - red-brown liquid
I2 - Dark grey crystalline solid which gives off a purple vapour when heated
How to test for chlorine
Damp blue litmus paper turns red then bleaches white
How do halogens react with some metals and hydrogen
Form metal and hydrogen halides
What is a halogen displacement reaction
A redox reaction where a more reactive halogen replaces a less reactive one
What are group 0 elements
Noble gases
Group 0 characteristics
Colourless gases at room temp.
Monatomic
Inert
Non-flammable
What happens as you go down group 0
Boiling, melting points, density all increase
Uses of noble gases
Argon - filament lamps (stops the hot filament from burning away)
Argon and helium - protects metals that are being welded
Helium - used in airships and balloons as it is less dense than air and non-flammable
