Groups In Periodic Table Flashcards
Alkali metal and water
Metal hydroxide and hydrogen
Properties of alkali metals
Soft, ductile, low density, low melting point compared to other metals, conductors, readily react with water
Why do alkali metals readily react more the further down on the PT
More atomic radii. More shielding. Weaker force of attraction between positive nucleus and negative electron. Keen to be lost for stability
Halogen and hydrogen
Hydrogen halide
Halogen and metal
Metal halide
Test for chlorine gas
Turns damp blue litmus paper red then bleaches white. Gas has to dissolve and react with the water. Hydrogen from the water makes hydrogen chloride which dissolves to make hydrochloric acid
Fluorine
F. Gas. Pale yellow
Chlorine
Cl. Gas. Pale green. Dense. Poisonous
Bromine
Br. Liquid. Red orange. Dense. Poisonous
Iodine
I. Solid. Purple grey. Crystalline
Astetine
At. Solid. Black
Property of hydrogen halides
Soluble
Halogen reactivity
Higher up in the PT, more reactive. Outer shell is nearer positive nucleus so force of attraction is greater and attracts free electrons strongly. Also causes displacement reactions when reacted with a solution
Inert
Chemically inactive
Properties of noble gases
Colourless gases. Inert (chemically unreactive). Non-flammable. Low melting point poor conductor no charge so can’t carry current. Stable
