What are the 5 groups
Primary, Secondary, In groups, Out groups, Reference groups
Primary group
Cooley:
A small group characterized by intimate and long term association and cooperation. They are fundamental in forming the social. Astute and ideals of the individual. We internalize the values and attitudes of our primary group and these become the lenses through which we view life.
Secondary groups
A larger more formal and impersonal group that comes together around a shared interest or activity. Secondary groups sometimes break down into smaller sub groups of primary groups such as cliques. Cliques are smaller, more intimate groups that come together from a larger group
In Groups
Groups to which we feel a sense of loyalty. In Groups shape our perceptions of the world, our view of right and wrong, and our behavior.
Out Groups
Groups toward which we feel a sense of antagonism
Sociologists don’t like psychologists
Reference groups
Group whose standards we use to evaluate ourselves. Reference groups exert tremendous influence over us.

Social Network
Social ties that link people together or connect people to each other
- Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat
Leadership
A leader is someone who influences others
Instrumental Leader
Keeps the group moving towards its goals and prevents members from becoming sidetracked
Expressive Leader
Someone who increases harmony and minimizes conflict within a group
