What is Culture?
The lifestyle of a group of people
Ex: traditions, clothing, food, family, religion, language, architecture, holidays, art, music, education, precious cultures
What are the 3 parts to Culture?
- Mores
- Folkways
- Norms
Mores
The laws and ethical values of a group of people
- define the rightness and wrongness of an act
- divided into 2 types: Real Mores & Ideal Mores
Real Mores
Include the laws of culture and thus have punishments attached to it
Ex: kill someone —> go to prison
Ideal Mores
Values and ethical beliefs of a culture or a subgroup within a culture
Ex: people who are anti-abortion
Folkways
The traditions of a culture
- can include the way a culture celebrates holidays or defines certain days as holidays
- if one breaks a folkway there is usually no punishment attached
- however folkways can become so imbedded in a culture that they can become Mores
Norms
The expected behavior or the way people should act in certain situations
- Norms DO NOT equal normal
Difference between Norms and Normal
Normal can include accepted behavior or what society has allowed to happen
Norms: expected, supposed
Normal: accepted, allowed
Subculture
A group within a culture that seeks to retain its own .mores, Folkways, and Norms but still adheres to the Mores, Folkways, and Norms of the dominant culture
Ex: cults, immigrant groups
Counter Culture
A group within a culture that DOES NOT adhere to the Mores, Folkways, and Norms of the dominant culture
- Seeks to change the Mores, Folkways, and Norms of the dominant culture into its own Mores, Folkways, and Norms
Ex: KKK, Neo Nazi Groups, Anarchists
