What is a Social Group?
A social group is 2 or more persons working together to achieve a common goal.
What are Primary Groups?
Primary Group are small intimate groups, who have regular face to face contact
eg: Support Groups
Music Groups
Math Club

What are Secondary Groups?
Secondary Groups are groups which lack face to face contact and intimacy, they have a formal structure.
eg: Political Parties
Office Organization

What are Formal Groups?
Those that have clear structure, organization & rules for their members.
eg: Sports Club
Trade Union
(Have rules for entry, dismissal & selection of leaders)
What are Informal Groups?
Groups that have no structure, no rules & no organisation.
eg: A group of boys playing football.
A group of girls singing.
What is a Trade Union?
A Trade Union is a permanent organisation created by workers to protect them at work.
eg: JTA
What are the functions of a Trade Union?
Collective Bargaining- to secure better working conditions.
Cultural Role- To encorage and assist in the expression of indegenous culture.
Economic Role- To divise strategies to reduce uneployment.
Educational Role- to fund education of members and their children
Future Role- To gain dignity and social justice for members
Political Role- To maintain a link with political parties and even sponsor members to run for political office, to gain political unity.
Social Role- To look aftet members who are unemployed,tired or sick
What are benefits members of the Trade Union enjoy?
-getting looked after when employed,retired or sick(Social Role)
-they secure workers condition & wages(Collective Bargaining)
-fund of education of members and their children(Educational Role)
What are Voluntary Groups?
Those that are formed in which the membership is voluntary, they provide service & support for a good cause.
eg: Red Cross
Mustard Community Service

What are Involuntary Groups?
Those that are formed for the membership of which an individual does not have any choice.
eg: Family
Race
Religion
What are Peer Groups?
Peer groups are groups with individuals around the same age group and social status,member may have their own heroes,slangs,idols,behaviour patterns and clothing.
What are In/We Groups?
These are groups with members having a specific form of identity such as names, badges and dress.

These are groups with no form of identity.

Why do formal groups last longer than informal groups?
Formal groups last longer than informal groups because they have a structure,purpose and rules to help keep the group organised.
