What is social loafing?
When individuals within a group put in less effort on a group task where contributions are pooled.
Factors that influence social loafing?
Greater anonymity
Valuing involvement in task
Inter group comparison
What is the study associated with social loafing and what were it’s findings?
Latane- the study looked at individuals efforts when they thought others were contributing. They found that motivation was what made people socially loaf.
Why do people socially loaf?
Output equity: They expect others to loaf.
Evaluation apprehension: They are anxious about being evaluated.
Matching to standard: They are unsure about performance standards.
What is social facilitation?
The presence of others enhances performance on easy tasks but impairs performance on difficult tasks.
What is Zajonc’s drive theory?
Arousal drives energy to produce dominant response.
What is Cottrells evaluation apprehension theory?
Attentive others produce fear of evaluation.
What is Barons distraction theory?
Attentional conflict- distraction from task.
What is deindividuation?
Loss of a persons sense of individuality and the reduction of normal constraints against deviant behaviour.
