Group 7 Trends Flashcards
Trend in atomic radius down a group
Increases down the group
Number of occupied energy levels increases
Atom size increases
Trend in electronegativity
Decreases down the group
Radius of each atom increases
More shielding so less attraction between + nucleus and outer e-
Trend in boiling point of group 7
Increases down the group
Larger molecules
So stronger van der waal forces
More energy needed to overcome
Oxidising power of group 7
Decreases down the group
Fewer shells in F so less shielding
Closer e- can get to the nucleus
E- more strongly attracted to nucleus so is more likely to accept e-
Reducing ability of group 7
Increases down the group
Number of shells increases so shielding increases
Outer e- are less strongly attracted to the nucleus
The e- are lost more easily and halide ion is more readily oxidised
